{"id":2351,"date":"2017-01-26T23:51:56","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T06:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.authorjmpoole.com\/?p=2351"},"modified":"2017-01-31T09:19:17","modified_gmt":"2017-01-31T16:19:17","slug":"the-great-amazon-battle-of-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.authorjmpoole.com\/?p=2351","title":{"rendered":"The Great Amazon Battle of &#8217;17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this corner, one of the largest companies that currently exists:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Amazon<\/span>.\u00a0 In the opposite corner?\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000;\">Me<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who may not know, I had to do battle with Amazon since they yanked my books and cancelled my author account.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re curious enough to be here &#8217;cause you&#8217;re wondering just what the hell happened, let me sum it up, in case you don&#8217;t want to read the War &amp; Peace novel that ensues. \u00a0Then, if you&#8217;re still interested, read on, as I go into specifics.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>summary<\/strong>: \u00a0Amazon sent me an email Tuesday of this week at 5pm, only it landed in my Junk mail folder. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t see it until around 10pm that night. \u00a0They (Amazon) accused me of creating bogus accounts to boost page reads of Case of the One-Eyed Tiger (CCF#1). \u00a0They say it&#8217;s against their rules. \u00a0As a result, my KDP account was officially terminated and they inform me that all my books will be removed, which they were the following day by 5pm. \u00a0 Now, bear in mind that I don&#8217;t know a damn thing about any &#8220;bogus accounts&#8221;.\u00a0 I&#8217;m completely in the dark.\u00a0 In a panic, I start writing emails, including sending one to Amazon&#8217;s bigwigs, and essentially prove to them that I have no knowledge of any bogus accounts and certainly didn&#8217;t create any. \u00a0Today (Thursday), I get the email from Amazon stating my account is reinstated. \u00a0My books reappear by 5pm.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, that&#8217;s the short version. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the long version, in the order in which it happened to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/24\/17. \u00a010pm. \u00a0<\/strong>I&#8217;m skimming through my Junk emails and notice a message from &#8220;title-submissions@amazon.com&#8221;, specifically from a &#8220;Katy C.&#8221; and is dated from earlier in the day, from around 5pm. \u00a0The actual email is <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.authorjmpoole.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kdpsnafu_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 They (Amazon) accused me of creating &#8220;systematic accounts&#8221; and using them to boost the page reads to manipulate the Kindle Unlimited platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/24\/17. \u00a010:01pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>Hoping this is just a phishing email, I immediately head to kdp.amazon.com to log into my account.\u00a0 Unable to do so.\u00a0 Have minor cardiac episode.\u00a0 Am desperately hoping this is some type of sick joke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 12:45am.\u00a0 <\/strong>Thanks to this, I&#8217;m unable to sleep.\u00a0 I fire off my first email to &#8220;title-submissions@amazon.com&#8221;.\u00a0 I officially ask them to tell me what&#8217;s going on.\u00a0 My message is as follows&#8230;<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #008000;\">Katy C. -\r\n \r\nI'm at a loss as to what you're referring to.\u00a0 Are you insinuating that someone has hacked my KDP account?\u00a0 I've been a self-published indie author since 2010.\u00a0 I published my first novel with Amazon on that year and have since released a total of 12 novels.\u00a0 I have never had a problem with anything there.\u00a0 I can only assume someone is trying to hack my account.\u00a0 \r\n \r\nI have since called Amazon Customer Service and they walked me through changing my password.\u00a0 However, I am still unable to log into my KDP account.\r\n \r\nCould I get someone to call me at (***) ***-**** to discuss this?\u00a0 I'm in the dark as much as you are with regards to this situation.\u00a0 \r\n \r\nThank you.\r\n \r\nJeffrey M. Poole\r\n<a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.AuthorJMPoole.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.AuthorJMPoole.com\r\n<\/a><\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 6:00am.\u00a0 <\/strong>Still unable to log into my KDP account.\u00a0 Verified books are all still on Amazon.\u00a0 Again, am hoping this is some sick, twisted prank.\u00a0 No response from Amazon as of yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 2:39pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>First followup email from Amazon, specifically from &#8220;John M&#8221;.\u00a0 This, unfortunately, confirms my worst fears.\u00a0 This is really happening, and Amazon has officially terminated my account.\u00a0 This is a shorter message and there&#8217;s no need to turn it into a PDF, either.\u00a0 John M writes:<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hello,\r\n\r\nThank you for your email concerning the status of your account.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Systematic accounts are those that facilitate illegitimate reading or borrow activity. You're welcome to promote your book through third-party websites and other services, but you are also responsible for ensuring that no tactics used to promote your book manipulate the Kindle platform and\/or Kindle programs.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">In order to help us evaluate your appeal, please provide any information about promotional or marketing service you might have used.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Best Regards,<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John M<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 4:45pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>I noticed that <em>every<\/em> title I had released in the Kindle store was now missing.\u00a0 The only books Amazon had of mine were my paperbacks, and I wasn&#8217;t convinced they wouldn&#8217;t mess with my Createspace account, either.\u00a0 My day seriously started spiraling straight back to UberPissedVille, with a layover at DepressedTowne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 5:35pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>I check for email.\u00a0 I get the message from above, stating I needed to provide them info about what marketing services I&#8217;ve used.\u00a0 I fired off a response to John, explaining everything I&#8217;ve done with regards to that book, which is to say, not much.\u00a0 The only promotional services I&#8217;ve used is theirs (Amazon&#8217;s) and a few FB ads.\u00a0 But, since the FB ads were so-so, I stopped using them around 3 months ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 8:27pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>In a fit of desperation, I look up corporate contact numbers for Amazon.\u00a0 Phone numbers, email addresses, anything!\u00a0 And then I find this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-customer-service-and-jeff-bezos-emails-2013-10\" target=\"_blank\">page<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, talking about how Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has gone on record, imploring people to contact him should there be a problem with <em>anything<\/em> Amazon related.\u00a0 And it listed his personal e-mail addy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 8:28pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>I pen an <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.authorjmpoole.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kdpsnafu_2red.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">email <\/a><\/strong><\/span>to\u00a0Mr. Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO Founder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 10:05pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>I get another response back from Amazon, only this time it is from another new person.\u00a0 This time around, I get &#8220;Luca F&#8221;, and he writes:<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hello,\r\n\r\nThank you for your email concerning the status of your account.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Unfortunately, we need some more time to look into the matter. We are sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience it may cause you. We will be in touch within five business days.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Thank you for your patience.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Best Regards,<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Luca F<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Amazon.com<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/25\/17.\u00a0 10:06pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>Now I&#8217;m freaking out.\u00a0 I was starting to feel like I was royally Fubar&#8217;d.\u00a0 What was I going to do?\u00a0 I knew that if I could talk to a human then I could convince them that they&#8217;ve made a mistake.\u00a0 However, I only had an email addy.\u00a0 And the founder&#8217;s email addy.\u00a0 So&#8230; why would a billionaire read\/respond to my email?\u00a0 I was certain Amazon just wanted to sweep me under a rug somewhere and be done with me.\u00a0 5 business days for some type of resolution?\u00a0 Surely someone else must have gone through this hell.\u00a0 I&#8217;m now researching this situation on Google.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t be the only person that has ever fallen on the wrong side of ye almighty Amazon.\u00a0 What I find, however, isn&#8217;t promising.\u00a0 Those that have had their KDP accounts terminated don&#8217;t get them back.\u00a0 Or, the very select few that I found that did, have said that it takes weeks, even months, to get the account back in good standing.\u00a0 Everyone says the same thing.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>Lack of a customer service number is disparaging as hell.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 The only communication is through email.\u00a0 In the pit of my stomach, I knew Amazon wasn&#8217;t going to reinstate my account.\u00a0 Not without a fight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/26\/17.\u00a0 12:40pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>That&#8217;s when this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.authorjmpoole.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kdpsnafu_3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">email <\/a><\/strong><\/span>arrives.\u00a0 I read it and let out a whoop.\u00a0 My KDP account was being reinstated!\u00a0 To verify, I immediately went to kdp.amazon.com to see if I could log in.\u00a0 <em>I could!<\/em>\u00a0 I checked the Kindle store.\u00a0 Nope, the books were gone.\u00a0 Still.\u00a0 At least I had hope that they&#8217;d be back shortly.\u00a0 So, did this mean that my midnight email to Amazon&#8217;s CEO made it to him??\u00a0 This seemed waayyyyy too quick of a resolution.\u00a0 Whatever.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t complaining.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/26\/17.\u00a0 2:00pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>I checked the Kindle store.\u00a0 All my titles were back!\u00a0 The number of reviews were still there, but there was a casualty.\u00a0 All my sales stats &amp; rankings were gone.\u00a0 The little bastards wiped all traces away, essentially demoting me to the rank of a newbie author.\u00a0 **sigh**\u00a0\u00a0 At least my books were back and were making sales again.\u00a0 I thought this story was finally done, but, believe-it-or-not, it took a turn for the good, with&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\/26\/17. \u00a02:49pm.\u00a0 <\/strong>My cell phone rings, with a 206 area code showing on the display.\u00a0 I used to live in Washington state.\u00a0 I happen to know 206 is the area code for Seattle.\u00a0 Home of Amazon.\u00a0\u00a0 This was a call I was more than willing to take.\u00a0 The person on the phone &#8211; and I missed his name &#8211; was a guy who identified himself as a member of the KDP Executive Service Team.\u00a0 He wanted to know if I had received the email, stating that my account had been reactivated.\u00a0 I told him that I had, and that I had also noticed all my books were back.\u00a0 He said that was good to hear, and then he made a discernible effort to see how I was doing.<\/p>\n<p>My response?\u00a0 &#8220;Not too happy with you people, pal.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t like getting accused of doing something illegal when there&#8217;s no proof.&#8221;\u00a0 He then launched into a spiel about how I had to be careful about the type of marketing I used, especially those companies who &#8220;guaranteed results&#8221;.\u00a0 I hit back with, &#8220;the only promotional marketing I did was with YOU.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That took him by surprise.\u00a0 He then went on to say that, after reviewing my account, and all my years of history with them, that they would have reinstated my account without any problems, and there was no need&#8230; <em>and this is my favorite part <\/em>&#8211; to &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>have written Jeff about this<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;.\u00a0\u00a0 I told him that I wasn&#8217;t sorry, and that you have to understand my point of view.\u00a0 There was no warning.\u00a0 There was no&#8230; &#8220;hey, if you do this again, we&#8217;re going to terminate your account&#8221;.\u00a0 I told the executive CSR that they should consider simply telling the author that they would be kicked out of KU, not terminate their account without any way of contacting this infamous &#8220;title-submissions@amazon.com&#8221; team that seems to hold the power of God at KDP.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He understood.\u00a0 He finished the call by asking me to be careful with the KU program, because there are many automated algorithms out there that are continually trying to sniff out illegitimate accounts and to keep their authors safe.\u00a0 I told him that I wouldn&#8217;t ever use KU again and that I was planning on pulling CCF1 out of KU just as soon as I could, which would be in a couple of weeks.\u00a0 He then volunteered to pull it out for me, which I instantly took him up on.<\/p>\n<p>Just as soon as I hung up the phone, I was logging into Smashwords and submitting all my files so that I could release the title wide.\u00a0 Not only did Smashwords convert the file in record time, but I also took a screencap of the conversion and posted it in FB, thanking Mark Coker.<\/p>\n<p>Now, FB instantly linked the &#8220;Mark Coker&#8221; to his actual FB page, and wouldn&#8217;t you know it, Mark instantly Liked the comment.\u00a0 I went back to my Smashwords account to see for myself that people were already downloading it when I noticed that it had <em>already been approved for the Premium Catalog.<\/em>\u00a0 Anyone familiar with Smashwords will know that it can take a day or two.\u00a0 We&#8217;re talking less than 2 minutes.\u00a0 Tops.\u00a0 Mark had to have a hand in that, which he admitted that he did.\u00a0 Mark, if you ever read this, thanks again, buddy.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; I get to end this day knowing that a rich billionaire founder of one of the biggest companies out there read my letter, asking for my account to be reinstated, and the founder\/owner of Smashwords did me a solid favor by getting my book fast tracked for premium acceptance.\u00a0 As I write this, I see that Case of the One-Eyed Tiger (Corgi Case Files #1) has already appeared for iBooks.\u00a0 In an effort to kick start the series, I&#8217;ve made this book free of charge.\u00a0 For the time being, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for letting me vent &amp;
